LAWAS: Students have been reminded not to engage in bullying, which is considered a criminal act often influenced by the easy access to social media today.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said the younger generation must cultivate strong self-discipline to navigate the challenges of modern life and the rapid development of information technology.
“Bullying today may be influenced by various forms of media literacy, including video games, which expose children to social media and other negative influences.
“These can easily shape our thinking in unhealthy ways.
“Hence, I urge all of you here not to become bullies or victims of bullying. Let us look out for one another — teachers included. If you have any information, report them to the police,” he said during his visit to SMK Lawas today.
In light of the recent cases, school liaison officers have been instructed to make more frequent visits to schools across Sarawak to help prevent misconduct and eliminate bullying culture.
Zainal pointed out that bullying is not part of Malaysian culture and constitutes a criminal offence that could lead to imprisonment, if convicted.
“This is what worries us most — when young people end up in prison, their future is gone. Even if you are academically excellent, without discipline, you will not go far.
“That is why discipline is crucial in shaping the character of a successful student,” he said.
Also present during the visit were Sarawak Deputy Police Commissioner DCP Saifullizan Ishak, senior officers from Sarawak Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK), Lawas police chief DSP Liong Tindan, acting principal of SMK Lawas Norfazila Ibrahim, and District Education officer Pengiran Abdul Kadir Pengiran Budin.
