KUCHING: At the halfway mark of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, the tournament continues to defy logic and expectation, reinforcing its status as football’s most democratic global spectacle.

Now deep into the Round of 32, the expanded format has already delivered drama, late twists and standout performances, reminding fans why the World Cup remains the most-watched sporting event on the planet.

Recent knockout matches have only added to the spectacle. England survived a stern test against DR Congo, coming from behind to win 2-1, with captain Harry Kane scoring twice to secure progression.

France produced a dominant display in a 3-0 win over Sweden, with Kylian Mbappé netting a brace to underline their title credentials.

Norway also impressed after Erling Haaland struck once in a 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast, keeping their underdog momentum alive.

For supporters in Kuching, the tournament is more than just a global event – it is a four-year ritual of hope, debate and divided loyalties, where club rivalries are set aside and national pride takes centre stage.

Sarawak Tribune spoke to several fans who shared their predictions and personal favourites as the competition heats up.

Musa

University student from Zimbabwe, Musa Machembe, studying at Swinburne University of Technology, is backing defending giants Argentina, placing his faith in Lionel Messi.

“Argentina, they have the best player in the world, Messi. If not, then France. They are also strong because of Mbappé,” he said.

Davin

Entrepreneur Davin Ngu, however, is looking beyond traditional favourites, tipping Norway as a surprise package while also acknowledging France’s strength.

“I think France will win the World Cup because they are really strong. But I really want Norway to win because Haaland is one of the rising stars,” he said.

Ashley

Meanwhile, 26-year-old Ashley Tan is hoping England can carry their momentum forward after Kane’s heroics against DR Congo.

“I think England will win the World Cup. I also loved David Beckham when he used to play, so yes, definitely England,” he said.

Ernesto

Another supporter, Ernesto Chez Barieng, 28, is putting his hopes on Colombia, citing admiration for their attacking talents.

“Colombia. My favourite player is Daniel Muñoz, besides Luis Díaz. I support Colombia this World Cup,” he said.

Dinnesh

Dinnesh Nicolas Rene also believes Argentina will go all the way in the tournament.

“It’s going to be historic for Argentina and for Messi, and probably this will be Messi’s last World Cup,” he said.

“I’m rooting for him. He has shown the quality and everything needed to lift the World Cup. So let’s go, Vamos Argentina,” he added

As the tournament deepens into knockout drama, Kuching’s conversations echo a familiar truth of the World Cup – where numbers matter less than belief, and every whistle can reshape destiny.
