SHAH ALAM: PKR Youth has called on the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government to quickly remove the laws viewed as oppressive to the people, especially the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA) and Prevention of Terrorism Act 2015 (POTA).
Its chief, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said the government should not be doing nothing about this, feel hampered to do anything or fear making political reforms.
“The Sedition Act, Official Secrets Act (OSA), SOSMA, POTA and other oppressive laws should be abolished altogether and replaced with laws that protect democracy and public security,” he said in his policy speech at the PKR Youth National Congress 2018, attended by over 400 delegates, here yesterday.
Nik Nazmi also urged the government not to rebrand racist and political propaganda machines like the Biro Tata Negara (National Civics Bureau) but for these just be left in the history books.
Meanwhile, he dismissed claims by certain quarters that PKR is the weakest party in PH, the ruling coalition.
He said, thankfully, PKR was also at the forefront in the “New Malaysia” process, with two menteri besar and a number of state executive councillors from among is Youth leaders.
“Now and then, we hear critics accusing us (PKR) of being the weakest link in PH, or there are those who think we are, but they are wrong,” he added.
Nik Nazmi, who did not defend his PKR Youth chief post in the party elections this time, also reminded the party’s Youth members not to go against the political reformation achieved after GE14 in making Malaysia more transparent. – Bernama
