DoE probes alleged odour pollution linked to fish premises

KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Sarawak Department of Environment (DoE) is investigating into alleged odour pollution from a fish processing premises located in the district’s industrial area.

The probe was initiated following public complaints about foul odour emissions in the vicinity.

Last Saturday (Jun 28), the DoE’s Stationary Source and Complaints Unit carried out a joint investigation together with the police and the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS).

During the operation, enforcement action was taken against the premises suspected to be linked to the pollution.

An Equipment Operation Suspension notice was issued under Section 38(1)(a) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974, requiring the premises to cease operations and carry out necessary corrective measures.

With this, DoE has reminded all industry operators to ensure full compliance with the Environmental Quality Act 1974 and its regulations to prevent enforcement action.
