ASSEMBLYMAN Billy Sujang, who represents the Opar constituency under the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), is known for his hands-on approach and strong connection with his constituents.

Although only three years into his role as an elected representative, he has already made a name for himself as someone who prioritises rural development and community well-being.

In an interview with Sarawak Tribune (ST) during a short break in the ongoing DUN sitting, Billy shared his thoughts on political life, personal reflections, and the values that continue to guide his journey.

What followed was a conversation filled with honesty, pride, and humility – revealing the human side of a leader who balances duty to the people with his own family commitments.

ST: Who do you usually hang out with during DUN breaks?

Billy: Oh, that’s easy, it’s Tebedu Assemblyman, Dr Simon Sinang Bada. He’s my buddy. Wherever I go, he’s there. We can’t be separated.

ST: If your political journey was a movie, what would the title be?

Billy: My political journey? It would be ‘From Rakyat to Rakyat’. Because that’s what it is – I came from the people, and everything I do is for the people.

ST: What’s the best advice someone in politics has ever given you?

Billy: The best advice came from my uncle, former Opar Assemblyman, Datuk Ranum Mina. He told me, “Never forget the people on the ground.” No matter how high you climb, one day you might fall – and the only people who will be there to catch you are those on the ground.

That stuck with me. You can know all the people above you, but if you ignore those below, you’re on your own when things go wrong. That’s why I believe they are very, very important.

ST: Has there been a moment during this sitting that made you feel especially proud or emotional?

Billy: Yes – today, actually. I felt emotional because 28 village chiefs and community leaders came to witness my debate. It was an honour, especially because this was my first time being selected by Tan Sri Speaker to debate on the motion in appreciation for the TYT’s address. I spent two days preparing, and the debate went very well. That moment meant a lot to me.

ST: Looking back at your time in the assembly, is there any achievement that stands out?

Billy: Honestly, I see everything I’ve done so far as an achievement. Compared to some others – I won’t name names – even though they’ve been in the assembly longer, I believe I’ve done more on the ground in just three years.

Every village in my constituency has felt my presence through my projects and initiatives. Some of the things my constituents have waited 60 years for – they’re finally getting it now. That makes me proud.

ST: How do you juggle family life with the long days in the assembly?

Billy: Once you enter politics, your time with family definitely shrinks. But you need to find balance. I try to make time – maybe not for long holidays, but at least dinner outings and short local trips.

I’ve taken my family to Penang and around Semenanjung, but we haven’t gone for an overseas trip together yet. It’s tough – two of my sons are still studying, and my daughter is already working. It’s not easy to gather everyone at once.

But hopefully next year – I’m planning something for them.
