BARIO: Healthcare delivery in one of Sarawak’s most remote communities has received a major lift with the donation of two vital medical devices worth RM78,500 to the Bario Health Clinic.

The equipment – an ultrasound machine valued at RM55,000, and a defibrillator worth RM23,500 – was secured through the efforts of Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) cum Mulu state assemblyman, Datuk Gerawat Gala.

The contribution, made by a private donor following Gerawat’s intervention, aims to strengthen emergency response, maternal care, and preventive health services in the highlands.

Speaking at the handover ceremony on Wednesday, Gerawat said the donation reflects a shared commitment to bridging the rural healthcare gap.

“This contribution will enhance the clinic’s ability to deliver more efficient and effective healthcare services, from health promotion and prevention to treatment and rehabilitation,” he said.

“I encourage the community to make full use of this equipment for the benefit of all.”

The defibrillator will enable faster response during cardiac emergencies while the ultrasound machine will improve antenatal screening, ensuring the safety of mothers and babies in a region often cut off by weather and geography.

Also present were Dr P. Raviwharmman A/L Packierisamy; Miri Divisional Health Officer; Dr Maurice Steve Utap, Head of Family Medicine Specialists for Miri Division; and the staff of the Bario Health Clinic.

For decades, the Bario Health Clinic has been the lifeline for Kelabit villagers scattered across the highlands.

With limited access to advanced facilities, medical evacuations to Miri have been common.

The new equipment is expected to reduce those risks and enhance on-site diagnosis and treatment.

The initiative underscores how collaboration between government representatives and private donors can drive real change in Sarawak’s most isolated communities, ensuring that no one is left behind in the pursuit of quality healthcare.
