KUCHING: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president, Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum, has left the door open to the possibility of Datuk Seri Doris Sophia Brodie becoming the party’s first-ever female president.
Responding to an online poll that placed the Sri Aman Member of Parliament as a top contender for the presidency, Salang responded, “Yes, why not?”
“However, with regard to the popularity of the individuals in the party, who it should be, who is the most popular to become the president – that question was never discussed.
“Personally, if you were to ask me, I would choose Datuk Seri Doris also.
“But other people may not say the same, and Datuk Seri Doris may say she is not interested,” he said.
He said this to reporters after chairing a three-and-a-half-hour Supreme Council meeting at the party’s headquarters here today.
Meanwhile, could Doris, who heads the PRS Women’s wing and one with four decades of experience in politics, rise to become the party’s first woman president?
That, only time or the party’s upcoming Triennial Delegates Conference (TDC) will tell.
As speculation mounts, all eyes are now on the party’s TDC scheduled for the third week of October this year.
All posts, including the presidency, will be open for contest, pending nominations from party divisions.
