MIRI: The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Sarawak has issued five prohibition notices to an employer following a workplace accident that claimed the life of a foreign man last week.

The accident occurred at around 9 am on Aug 22, when a 19-year-old worker reportedly fell from the rear of a palm oil tractor at an oil palm plantation near Jalan Lambir.

“He was found unconscious and rushed to Miri Hospital for immediate treatment.

“However, he was pronounced dead a few hours later while receiving treatment,” the department said.

DOSH officers conducted an on-site investigation and later issued five prohibition notices against the employer to halt high-risk activities at the plantation until proper safety measures are implemented.

The case is being investigated under Section 15(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) 1994 for failing to ensure the safety, health and welfare of workers.

Upon conviction, the offence carries a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years or both.

The department said legal action will be taken against any responsible party in the event of a violation of OSHA 1994 (Act 514).
