SIBU: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian marked this year’s Sarawak Day with a strong show of unity and grassroots engagement, leading a flag distribution programme across the town that celebrated the state’s identity while reaffirming the importance of inclusive development and community partnership.
Accompanied by his wife Datin Amar Enn Ong Siok Ean, Dr Sim joined Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan Branch chairman Kevin Lau Kor Jie, Kapitan Daniel Ngu Ing Huong, members of the Sibu Town Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) Bandar Sibu, as well as SUPP Bawang Assan Branch members, in distributing Sarawak flags to traders, hawkers, business operators and members of the public and at Aloha Cafe here yesterday (Juiy 22).
The programme drew enthusiastic responses from the public, with many proudly waving the Sarawak flag and stopping to interact with the delegation, creating a lively and patriotic atmosphere in conjunction with the state’s annual commemoration.
Lau, who is also SUPP Youth chief, said the initiative was more than a ceremonial gesture, describing the Sarawak flag as a powerful symbol of the state’s identity, shared aspirations and remarkable development journey.
“Every flag distributed represents not only our pride as Sarawakians but also serves as a reminder of the sacrifices and determination that have shaped the Sarawak we enjoy today,” he said.
He expressed hope that programmes of this nature would inspire younger Sarawakians to deepen their appreciation of the state’s history, multicultural heritage and longstanding tradition of harmony, while encouraging them to carry forward the values of unity, inclusivity and love for Sarawak.
Beyond fostering the Sarawak Day spirit, Lau said the programme also strengthened engagement between community leaders and the local business sector, acknowledging the vital role played by retailers, hawkers, food operators and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in sustaining Sibu’s economy.
He described local entrepreneurs as the backbone of the town’s economic resilience, noting that their perseverance and commitment have contributed significantly to employment opportunities, commercial activity and overall economic growth.
During the visit, Lau also briefed Dr Sim on several development matters affecting the Bawang Assan constituency, including issues requiring attention to support future growth and improve public amenities.
The discussion also touched on local development priorities and the evolving needs of residents.
Lau said continuous engagement with the state leadership remains crucial to ensure that the aspirations of the people are translated into practical policies and development initiatives, while efforts will continue to secure more people-centric projects that enhance the quality of life across the constituency.
In conjunction with Sarawak Day, Lau called on all Sarawakians to preserve the spirit of mutual respect, unity and cooperation that has long defined the state’s multicultural society.
“The collective strength of the people remains Sarawak’s greatest asset, with confidence that unity will continue to drive the state’s progress as it pursues sustainable development and greater prosperity for future generations,” he pointed out.
