KUCHING: A delegation from the United Professional Council (UPC), led by chairperson Laura Yiin, paid a courtesy call on Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian recently.

The visit was to update Dr Sim on the progress of the ongoing Inter-Professional Games and to extend an official invitation for him to attend the grand closing dinner on November 7.

UPC comprises 11 professional bodies, with representatives at the meeting including Jeremy Lu (Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia), Nigel Lim (Institute of Chemistry Malaysia), Lau Meng Lin (Malaysian Institute of Planners), Jackson Lim (Malaysian Institute of Accountants), Rudy Azli Othman (Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia Sarawak Chapter), Yii Huong Swee (Institution of Engineers Malaysia), Alan Bong (Advocates Association of Sarawak), and Dr Samuel Ting (Sarawak Pharmaceutical Society).

The games, which began in July, feature six sporting events – darts, pickleball, futsal, golf, tenpin bowling, and badminton – aimed at fostering fellowship and camaraderie among Sarawak’s professional community.

Golf will be held this Sunday (August 17), followed by tenpin bowling, with badminton bringing the series to a close in September.

Dr Ting, who led the inaugural pickleball competition under the Sarawak Pharmaceutical Society, also presented the Datuk Amar Prof. Dr Sim Kui Hian Trophy to Dr Sim in recognition of his continuous support for Sarawak’s professional bodies.

Dr Sim noted the growing popularity of pickleball among youth and working professionals, reaffirming his commitment to support the state’s professional community.

He expressed his vision of encouraging more world-class Sarawakian professionals to return and contribute to the state’s growth, sharing stories of Sarawakians who have made a global impact and are now returning home with their families.

“We want a Sarawak where people don’t just ask how rich it is, but how forward-thinking and value-driven it is,” he said, stressing the importance of safeguarding Sarawak’s constitutional rights, including greater autonomy in health and education.

The Inter-Professional Games 2025 will culminate in the grand closing dinner on Nov 7, celebrating unity, collaboration, and the shared commitment of Sarawak’s professional community towards the state’s progress.
