KUCHING: The theme of this year’s Wesak Day celebration, “Foster true compassion and wisdom, Foster true peace and harmony,” resonates deeply with the current state of global affairs, says Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
Speaking at the Wesak Day 2025 celebration hosted by the Sarawak Buddhist Association today (May 12), Dr Sim stressed that the message could not be more timely, given increasing global division and unrest.
“This theme not only encourages us to go beyond our rituals, and in our daily life, but it also renews the cause of empathy, service, and care for the others, especially the less fortunate.
“This Wesak Day function is part of the Sarawak government’s official function through the Unit for Other Religion (UNIFOR).
“Therefore, I want to thank all the religions for coming together and playing their part and role for the state’s nation building,” he said in his speech.
Dr Sim, who is also Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government praised UNIFOR for their commitment and contribution to the people irrespective of race and religion.
“Aside from being a unit for other religions, there is also the Sarawak Unit for Other Religions Charitable Trust, looking after the welfare.
“This goes to show that Sarawak is sincere in ensuring progressing nation building,” he added.
Meanwhile, Malaysian Buddhist Association Sarawak branch chairman Datuk Seri Tay Chin Kin said in the state, Wesak Day celebrations are a time for different Buddhist associations, societies, and temples to come together and work as one.
“Today, present here are our friends from different religions. I take this opportunity to call upon everyone, under the great leadership of the Sarawak Government and UNIFOR, let us continue to come together, not only among the Heads of Religions but also among all members.
“Together, we build harmony and unity in our diverse society. Here in Malaysia, we are proud to live in a country that is rich in different cultures, races, and religions.
“With mutual respect and understanding, we can encourage each other to practice kindness and respect for all people, regardless of differences,” said Tay.
Wesak Day marks the birth, enlightenment and passing of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha.
