SARIKEI: A long-awaited drainage cleaning project at Jalan Ming Chiang, Sungai Meradong here has finally been completed, resolving years of persistent stagnant water and poor flow that have troubled residents in the area.
Carried out by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sarikei division, the project forms part of ongoing efforts to enhance rural infrastructure and reduce flood risks for local communities.
The works involved extensive clearing of drainage lines to ensure smoother water discharge and safer surroundings for nearby households.
Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability and Sarikei MP, Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii, reaffirmed the government’s dedication to improving rural drainage systems and addressing community concerns through phased development.
“Community needs remain our priority, and every complaint will be handled as best as possible,” he said, emphasising that rural infrastructure projects will continue to be closely monitored to ensure their effectiveness.
Huang was represented by Wong Soon Mee from the Sarikei Parliamentary Service Centre during a site visit on Wednesday, joined by DID Assistant Engineer Mary, to inspect the upgraded drainage following the project’s completion. The visit also included the formal handover of the works from the contractor to DID.
Local residents expressed gratitude for the swift response to an issue that had long disrupted their daily routines, noting that the improved drainage system has already shown visible positive impact.
