MIRI: The project to upgrade the drainage system at Jalan Dato Permaisuri 2C, Permyjaya here has been successfully completed, bringing relief to local residents after years of struggling with flooding and stagnant water.
Transport Minister and Senadin assemblyman Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, said the RM300,000 project was implemented under the Rural Transformation Project (RTP) and began on January 6, 2025.
According to him, the project experienced minor delays due to weather conditions and the clearing of road reserve areas, resulting in an extension of 40 days.
The new completion date was June 14, compared to the original target of May 5.
“This project aims to resolve the frequent flooding and stagnant water issues in the residential area, which also posed a dengue risk due to the static water,” he said during a site visit today.
Lee explained that the project involved the construction of a covered concrete drain measuring 243 metres in length and 2.5 metres in width, replacing the existing, inadequate drain which was only 1.5 feet wide.
“Previously, residents covered the small existing drain with concrete to ease passage but this blocked water flow, causing floods and water stagnation which increased the risk of dengue.
“Water couldn’t flow and this caused flooding and stagnant water. This also increased the risk of dengue.
“With this project, the water now flows smoothly and the problem has been resolved,” he said.
He added that this was the only RTP project for the area this year.
