BINTULU: Construction of a new drainage system at the Bintulu Anglican Cemetery is scheduled to begin next month under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) by Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang Leong Ming.

The project, expected to be completed within four months, involves the installation of a new drainage system and upgrades to the existing structure to improve rainwater flow.

An official site visit was held Tuesday (June 11), during which Pang witnessed the handing over of project documents from the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) to the appointed contractor.

The handover marked the official launch of the long-awaited, high-impact project welcomed by the local community.

Pang said the effort aims to address flash flood issues that frequently occur at the cemetery due to its low-lying location and outdated drainage infrastructure.

“This situation has caused discomfort and concern among church members and families visiting the cemetery.”

He added that he had received numerous appeals from churchgoers requesting immediate action to resolve the flooding issue.

To ensure transparency and effective implementation, Pang invited church representatives to help monitor the progress of the project on-site.

“Community involvement is very important to ensure the project runs smoothly and meets their needs.”

He also stressed that his team remains open to public feedback during the construction period, assuring that any complaints or suggestions would be given due attention.

Pang expressed confidence that the completed project would significantly reduce flooding and improve the overall comfort of cemetery visitors.
