SARIKEI: Drainage upgrades have been completed at three flood-prone areas here to reduce the risk of flash floods and improve road safety during heavy rain.
The projects — located at Jalan Repok, the back lane of Jalan Hospital near Sarikei Health Clinic, and Jalan Rejang — were funded through federal allocations.
Sarikei MP Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii said the initiative was aimed at alleviating flood problems that frequently caused inconvenience to road users during heavy downpours.
“The drainage at Jalan Rejang spans 326 metres with a depth of 1.2 metres, while Jalan Repok measures 162 metres long with depths ranging from 1.2 to 1.5 metres. The back lane of Jalan Hospital was upgraded with 73 metres of U-drains, each 1.8 metres wide and deep..
“All three projects have been fully completed,” he said in his statement today (July 22).
He recently visited all three locations with his service centre team to inspect the completed work and ensure everything was carried out effectively.
“We have long been aware of the flash flood issues here, especially during heavy rainfall.
“These drainage upgrades are part of our commitment to provide lasting solutions and ensure the safety and comfort of the people,” he said.
He added that he had engaged with the relevant departments to identify root causes and implement long-term measures to prevent blockages and facilitate smoother water flow.
Huang also expressed appreciation to the people for their continued support and cooperation with the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government.
“I extended my gratitude to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for his leadership and for channeling development funds to the Sarikei and Meradong areas,” he said.
