SARIKEI: Rural communities in Bintangor are breathing easier after critical drainage works has been completed to eliminate recurring flood risks that have plagued the area during monsoon seasons.

Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii, Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities as well as Sarikei MP and Repok assemblyman, remains committed to improving basic rural infrastructure development for the welfare of the people.

Through the allocation from the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) Sarikei Division, cleaning and maintenance works on the drainage system have been carried out in the rural areas of Bintangor to address issues of water pooling, non-functioning drains, and blocked water flow.

The team from Huang’s Service Centre went for an inspection of the completed drainage cleaning and maintenance works at Sungai Tekam along with DID Sarikei Division officers yesterday morning (29 Dec).

DID officially certified the project’s completion, confirming the drainage system was now operating at optimal efficiency.

Wong Soon Mee represented the Deputy Minister at the handover ceremony, where completion documents were formally received.

The project directly addresses long-standing complaints from residents about waterlogged areas, malfunctioning drains and blocked water channels that turned minor rainfall into major flooding events.

“The drainage improvements have made a real difference,” local residents said, crediting Huang’s responsiveness to rural infrastructure needs. They reported significantly reduced flash flooding and water accumulation, particularly during heavy rains.

The site visit included Kinchu Ajan, representative of Repok Parliamentary Service Centre, Mary, Assistant Engineer at DID Sarikei Division and affected residents who witnessed the infrastructure upgrades firsthand.

The completion marks another step in ongoing efforts to upgrade basic infrastructure in Sarawak’s rural constituencies, where drainage and flood mitigation remain pressing concerns for agricultural communities.
