SARIKEI: Six motorists have each been fined RM10,000 and temporarily stripped of their driving licences after pleading guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol.
The offenders were charged at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday (July 28), under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 following their arrests during ‘Ops Mabuk’ conducted throughout June and July around Sarikei town.
Sarikei police chief Supt Aswandy Anis said the cases were heard before magistrate Stella Augustine Druce, with prosecution led by Insp Shazwan from the district Criminal Investigation Division (CID) D5 branch.
None of the men was represented by counsel.
The court sentenced each offender to a RM10,000 fine and between one and five days’ imprisonment. Those who failed to pay the fine will face an additional jail term of between one and three days.
In addition, all six had their driving licences suspended for two years.
Aswandy said the convicted motorists have been sent to Sibu Prison to serve the custodial sentences imposed by the court.
He advised motorists to obey traffic laws and never drive after consuming alcohol.
Aswandy stressed that police would continue intensifying enforcement operations to improve road safety and reduce traffic accidents in the district.
