SIBU: Police have arrested a man believed to be the driver of a car that rammed into a motorcyclist along Jalan Oya near SMK St Elizabeth on Sunday.
The incident had gone viral on Facebook after a 1.29-minute video showed a Perodua Kenari crashing into a motorcycle, causing the rider to fall onto the road.
Following that, the driver, believed to be in his 20s, attempted to flee the scene and even crashed into at least eight other vehicles in the area.
Acting on information, the police swiftly tracked down and detained the suspect to facilitate investigations.
Sibu Police Chief, ACP Zulkipli Suhaili, said the suspect’s urine tests found him positive for amphetamine.
“The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving on a public road.
“If convicted, he faces up to five years in jail, a fine up to RM15,000, and disqualification from holding a driving licence for at least two years,” he said.
In addition, the suspect is also being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 after testing positive for drugs.
The offence carries a fine of up to RM5,000, or imprisonment up to two years, or both, upon conviction.
Zulkipli advised the public not to speculate or spread unverified information that could hinder the ongoing investigation.
