BAU: Police arrested three Indonesian nationals, including a married couple, at a petrol station along Jalan Tasik Biru here on Friday (Apr 24) for suspected involvement in migrant smuggling.

Bau Police Chief, Supt Mohd Haide A. Rahman said the trio were detained at about 5.30 pm while refuelling a Perodua Myvi at a PETRONAS station.

He said checks found the driver, a 37-year-old man, had a passport, while his two passengers – a 38-year-old man and his 43-year-old wife – had no valid travel documents.

“Initial investigation found that the driver had been contacted earlier to pick up the couple near the Biawak Immigration Post in Lundu and take them to Kuching for work. He also admitted he was promised RM500,” he said.

Haide said the couple, from Lombok, Indonesia, admitted entering Sarawak through an illegal route via an oil palm plantation before reaching an area near the immigration post.

Police seized the Myvi, a car key and three mobile phones during the arrest.

The case is being investigated under Section 26 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

The driver is expected to be remanded under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012.
