BINTULU: A lorry driver was killed after his timber-laden vehicle caught fire following a crash at a logging road in Samarakan yesterday (Jun 8).

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the victim was identified as Kanang Inggai, 57.

Firefighters from Bintulu station were dispatched to the scene near Medsum Trading Sdn Bhd — about 69km from the town — after receiving a distress call at 12.56 pm.

Upon arrival, they found the lorry cabin completely engulfed in flames. However, the fire had already been doused by company workers using two extinguishers.

The victim was discovered trapped inside the burnt cabin and his remains were extricated by firefighters at 2.49 pm.

His remains were later handed over to the police for transportation to the hospital.

The team ended the operation at 4.26 pm.

It is understood that rescuers faced some difficulty reaching the location due to rough logging road conditions.
