Drug addict mother faces five years behind bars

KUCHING: The Sessions Court sentenced a 41-year-old single mother with two kids to five years’ imprisonment today for repeatedly administering amphetamine and methamphetamine to herself.

Sharifah Norsina Wan Arsat pleaded guilty to the charge read before Judge Noor Hisham Mohd Jaafar.

In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered her to undergo two years of police supervision under the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) upon completion of her sentence.

She was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which is punishable under Section 39C(1) of the same Act.

Under Section 39C(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, a person convicted shall be punished with imprisonment for up to seven years and shall also be liable to whipping of up to three strokes.

Sharifah Norsina committed the offence on Dec 27, 2024, by administering amphetamine and methamphetamine to herself, having two previous convictions for offences under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Her two prior convictions were recorded on Feb 29, 2024 and April 4, 2024.

According to the facts of the case, on Dec 27, 2024, police from the Kuching Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) apprehended Sharifah Norsina and subjected her to an initial urine screening test.

The screening test results returned positive for both amphetamine and methamphetamine.

She was immediately arrested following the screening test. Her urine sample was subsequently sent to the Pathology Department of Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), where laboratory analysis confirmed that she had tested positive for the said drugs.

As a result, she was found to have committed an offence under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39C(1)(b) of the same Act.

The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Adriana Maisarah Mohd Farid, while Sharifah Norsina was unrepresented.
