Drug trafficking suspect apprehended in drug bust

MIRI: A 25-year-old local man has been apprehended on suspicion of drug trafficking, during operations conducted by the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (BSJND) of the Miri District Police Headquarters.

The arrest took place on Friday, following a targeted raid in the Jalan Bulan Sabit area here.

During the operation, officers seized a substantial quantity of drugs, including 604.4 grammes believed to be Ecstasy powder and 13.8 grammes suspected to be Erimin 5 pills.

The total street value of the confiscated substances is estimated at RM37,392.80.

In addition to the drugs, the authorities also confiscated a Honda vehicle, valued at RM80,000.

According to Miri Police chief, ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, the suspect is currently in custody and is assisting with the investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 12(2) of the same Act.

Should the suspect be found guilty under Section 39A(2), he faces the possibility of the death penalty or, if spared, a life sentence along with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.

Moreover, offences under Section 12(2) carry penalties of up to RM100,000 in fines or a maximum of five years in prison, or both.
