MERADONG: Two men were each sentenced to five years’ imprisonment by the Sessions Court in Sarikei after being convicted under Section 39C(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for repeat drug-related offences.
Meradong police chief DSP Tansli Mering said the accused, aged 28 and 25, were charged on Mar 25 by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division (NCID) here.
“The case was heard before Judge Stella Augustine Druce, while Inspector Herry Alban Ali prosecuted.
“The court was told that both individuals had more than two prior convictions under Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act, which led to the current charge under Section 39C(1),” he said in a statement.
He added that the first accused, who had four previous records, was sentenced to five years in prison, two strokes of the cane, and two years of police supervision upon release.
“The second accused, with two prior records, received five years’ imprisonment, one stroke of the cane, and two years of police supervision.
“Section 39C(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 provides for a maximum sentence of seven years’ imprisonment and up to three strokes of the cane,” he added.
Tansli said police view drug-related offences seriously and will not compromise in addressing the issue within the community.
He also urged members of the public to come forward with information on drug activities in the district.
