THE Sarawak government has proactively developed a centralised database system known as the e-Firearm System to improve the management of shotgun licenses and permits.

Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk Seri John Sikie Tayai said that the government is deeply concerned about public safety and the well-being of the people, particularly in preventing the misuse of firearms, especially shotguns.

The current policies, he said, allow shotgun ownership to be transferred only from parents to their sons or daughters, and usage is strictly limited to the protection of agricultural produce.

He said the government remains ready to review existing policies, including the conditions and requirements of the Permit Carry and Use, in line with current demands and safety standards.

“This system is a significant digital transformation designed to enhance efficiency, transparency and integrity in the management of shotgun licenses in Sarawak,” he said when delivering his ministerial winding-up speech at the DUN sitting today (Dec 1).

The e-Firearm System, he said, functions not only as a platform for storing and maintaining records of license holders and Permit Carry and Use holders, but also for applications related to transferring registration of shotguns and changing ownership names.

He said that with this digital system, management, monitoring, and safety audits can be conducted more systematically and efficiently.

“The e-Firearm System is expected to be fully operational by next year, marking another important milestone in the state government’s efforts to digitalise its services while ensuring the safe and responsible management of firearms across Sarawak.

“This initiative highlights the state’s commitment to modernising public service administration while prioritising community safety and the responsible use of firearms in rural and agricultural areas,” he said.
