KUCHING: A smart parking system will be introduced here from Jan 1, 2026, making it the first city in Malaysia to integrate public and private parking into a single digital platform.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said that the initiative was in line with the Sarawak Premier’s vision for digital economy transformation and had been approved by the State cabinet at its recent meeting.
“We are finalising the contract agreement with the new concessionaire, who will conduct a pilot run beginning Nov 1, 2025, for two months before the official launch,” he said in a statement.
Key features of the modernised system include seamless mobile app payment for on-street council parking, with the option to continue using coupons until further notice; real-time monitoring and enforcement using advanced License Plate Recognition (LPR) technology similar to shopping malls; and integration with private shopping mall parking through the same application.
The app will also allow motorists to extend parking sessions directly via mobile or QR code, as well as check availability of spaces in advance.
Wee said the system would reduce traffic congestion, save time, lower fuel consumption and support a greener environment.
“This initiative is designed to provide greater convenience and efficiency for our citizens while enhancing Kuching’s status as a connected and digital city,” he stressed.
