SIBU: The public is urged not to take kidney health lightly as many patients only realise the problem when the condition is already at a serious stage.
Sibu Kidney Foundation (SKF) chairman, Datuk Vincent Lau Lee Ming said early detection through health screening is the most effective step in combating the chronic disease.
“Many people only realise they have kidney problems when they have reached a serious stage.
“Therefore, kidney health awareness programmes like today play an important role in educating the public and encouraging regular health check-ups.
“Prevention is always better than cure, and early detection can make a big difference in protecting kidney health,” he said in conjunction with the celebration of World Kidney Day 2026 with the theme ‘Kidney Health for All – Caring for People, Protecting the Planet’ programme held at SKF premises here on Sunday (March 8)
Apart from the focus on prevention, Lau also emphasised SKF’s continued commitment which has now served the community in Sibu and the Central Region for over three decades since its establishment in 1993.
As a non-profit welfare organisation, SKF, he said, remains steadfast in its mission to provide affordable dialysis treatment and medical support to those in need through the help of corporate partners and volunteers.
“Our mission has always been to enhance and prolong life through compassionate care and strong community support.
“However, this effort cannot be carried out alone. The continuous support from the community, sponsors, volunteers and healthcare professionals has enabled the foundation to continue this important mission and help those in need,” he said.
As a proactive measure, SKF provided various activities throughout the programme including free health tests, special blood screening packages, professional talks, and medical consultation sessions for patients and family members.
Also present to give a briefing was nephrologist, Dr Tiong Kung Ung, who shared his expertise on dialysis diet management and early stage chronic kidney disease care.
