LAWAS: Early preparations for disasters arising from continuous rainfall are crucial to ensure safety measures and aid are managed more effectively.

In stating this, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said although the situation in the Limbang Division and Lawas District remains under control, every relevant party must be prepared to face problems that arise.

“It is better to be prepared in advance. We have identified flood-prone areas such as Trusan and Sundar and have taken steps to establish evacuation centres for flood victims,” he said in a press conference after chairing the Lawas District Disaster Committee meeting at the District Council on Saturday.

The special meeting to strengthen preparedness for potential disasters arising from continuous rainfall was attended by various government agencies and relevant stakeholders.

Awang Tengah explained that a total of 14 temporary evacuation centres (PPS) have been designated to accommodate affected residents, in addition to the provision of emergency equipment such as rescue boats, life jackets, and food supplies for immediate distribution.

He also emphasised the importance of cooperation among all departments and agencies, including community leaders and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), to ensure smooth rescue and relief operations.

“Instructions on preventive measures such as drainage system clearing have been given to the Department of Drainage and Irrigation (DID) to reduce flood risks.

“Authorities are also considering safety aspects, including the risks of landslides, falling trees, and crocodile threats that may occur during floods.

“If the public is instructed to evacuate, they should do so immediately for their safety. We have also prepared assets such as helicopters to deliver aid to remote areas if necessary,” he added.
