KUCHING: Kota Sentosa assemblyman, Wilfred Yap Yau Sin, announced that the Premier’s Department has approved his Rural Transformation Project (RTP) 2024 application to utilise RM300,000 for the purpose of upgrading the existing earth drains at Kampung Stutong Iban here.

This application was approved following his meeting with the village development committee.

It had expressed its concern about the flash flood at their village as the earth drain erosion was getting from bad to worse, and in danger of collapsing altogether.

“Despite the increase in the number of residents moving into the BDC Stutong area through new housing estates, the earth drains in the village have never been upgraded for the last twenty years.

“Upon hearing the concerns of the village development committee and local residents, I immediately applied to allocate my RTP in the sum of RM300,000 under phase one to rectify the predicament faced by the local residents.

“Together with officers from the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) as the appointed implementing agency, we visited the site for the drainage upgrading works under my approved RTP 2024 project, for the upgrading works at certain critical areas from earth to concrete drains, to speed up water discharge and prevent further soil erosion,” he said in his recent statement.

The visit to the site was specifically arranged by Yap’s service centre with the village development committee to identity the critical flash flood areas for carrying out the upgrading drainage works.

“I requested DID officers to urgently complete the design and specifications of the said drainage upgrading works so that the project can be started and completed soonest to mitigate the inconveniences caused by the flash flooding.

“I will also co-ordinate with DID to ensure that there will be no delay in the implementation of this RTP 2024 project.

“The subsequent RTP drainage upgrading projects are expected at Kampung Stutong Iban in the near future based on their urgency through phased implementation to ensure financial adequacy of my annual RTP funding,” he added.
