KUCHING: The state Education Department is ready for any potential flooding in schools during the examination season, its director Datuk Azhar Ahmad said.

He said his department has identified flood-prone areas and established a disaster management committee comprising various federal and state agencies, assuring that the committee is poised to respond should floods occur during the Sijil Peperiksaan Malaysia (SPM) 2023 examination period, scheduled from Jan 30 to Mac 7.

“SPM candidates who live in flood risk areas are given the options to stay in the hostel, close relatives’ house or the nearest centre during this period.

“If any assistance is needed, candidates, parents and guardians may contact our department or the education district department for help,” he said when met by reporters after he attended the first day of SPM examination at Sekolah Seni Malaysia Sarawak, Salak Land District, Jalan Sultan Tengah here, today.

He reassured that as of present, no schools in Sarawak have reported flooding incidents.

This year’s SPM examination has attracted over 35,000 candidates across 257 examination centres statewide.
