BINTULU: Swift action by firefighters ensured the safe evacuation of eight people after floodwaters left them stranded at a squatter house in Seberkas, Kidurong last night (Dec 23).

The victims — comprising two men, a woman, an elderly man, four boys and a girl — were trapped inside the house as rising waters cut off safe access to the area.

Firefighters from Bintulu station were promptly dispatched to the scene, about 15km away, following an emergency call at 10.32 pm.

Upon arrival, they immediately carried out evacuation efforts using an aluminium boat, safely ferrying all victims to higher ground.

Those rescued told the team that they would temporarily stay with relatives while waiting for the floodwaters to subside.

Once the victims were safely relocated and no further assistance was required, the operation concluded at 11.51 pm.
