MIRI: Eight people escaped unharmed after a two-storey rental house was gutted by fire in the early hours of Monday in Miri, firefighters said.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said it received an emergency call at 1.28am about a blaze at Jalan 1B, Kampung Pujut Sungai Adong.

Firefighters from Lopeng fire station, supported by a unit from Miri Sentral, arrived within minutes to find the structure already fully engulfed.

The house, a non-permanent two-storey building used as rental accommodation, was destroyed in the fire. It was occupied by two families at the time of the incident.

Firefighters deployed hose lines from the engine’s onboard water supply to contain the flames, before carrying out overhaul work to extinguish remaining hotspots and prevent re-ignition.

The fire was brought under control at about 2am.

All eight occupants managed to get out safely. No injuries were reported.

A total of 14 firefighters were involved in the operation, supported by four appliances, including fire rescue tenders and an emergency medical unit.

Police, Civil Defence Force personnel and utility officers were also at the scene.

Operations ended at 4.40am after the area was declared safe.

The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are under investigation.
