KUCHING: A total of eight items were gazetted as price-controlled goods by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) for the upcoming Gawai celebration.

These include matured live chicken, chicken wings, China-imported garlic, curly chillies and live pig which the latter’s maximum price is set at the farm level.

The Ministry’s director general of enforcement, Datuk Azman Adam said controlled prices for the items will be from May 29 until June 4.

He said KPDN enforcement officers will be overseeing the compliance of traders on the controlled prices.

“A total of 189 KPDN enforcement involved in the overseeing the SHMMP scheme. 97 of them will head down to the field to oversee the food supply, price of goods and prevent profiteering activities from happening,” he said.

He said this in a press conference after conducting walkabout SHHMP Hari Gawai 2024 implementation at Farley Supermarket here on Wednesday (May 29).

The SHMMP Hari Gawai 2024, according to Azman will be implemented under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011.

In a related development, Azman said that nearly 1,000 inspections were carried out last year, and no complaints related to the SHMMP were received from consumers.

He said this means both consumers and traders understand their respective roles, and it is hoped that this year too, there will be no complaints regarding sudden price hikes and such.

“Our officers will also visit retail premises because the implementation of SHMMP is not only to control prices at the retail level but also at the wholesale level.

“It is to ensure that all retail traders selling controlled goods receive the profit determined by the government. In fact, many other supply prices of goods are controlled by the government so far, such as eggs, cooking oil, and so on,” he said.

Also present during the press conference and walkabout were Sarawak KPDN director Matthew Dominic Barin and other distinguished guests.
