Eight in 10 firms choose social media

KUCHING: Social media remained the preferred digital platform for Malaysian businesses in 2024 as more establishments expanded their online presence, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).

DOSM said 80.3 per cent of businesses used social media last year, while overall web presence rose to 74.4 per cent from 72.7 per cent in 2023.

The findings, published in the Statistics on Usage of ICT and E-Commerce by Establishments 2025, also showed businesses continued expanding through owned websites (58.7 per cent), e-marketplaces (44.1 per cent) and websites hosted by other entities (38.0 per cent).

Digital adoption remained widespread, with 97.2 per cent of businesses using computers and 95.3 per cent connected to the internet.

Chief Statistician Malaysia Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said digitalisation had become a strategic business decision that supported innovation, improved efficiency and strengthened resilience.

Manufacturing recorded the highest web presence at 76.2 per cent, followed by services (74.6 per cent), construction (73.2 per cent) and mining and quarrying (59.8 per cent).

Construction also recorded the highest computer and internet usage at 97.4 per cent each.

Businesses continued strengthening their digital infrastructure, with Wide Area Network (WAN) remaining the most widely used network at 89.4 per cent, ahead of Local Area Network (LAN) at 77.5 per cent and Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) at 71.8 per cent.

Fixed broadband remained the dominant internet connection at 94.0 per cent, while mobile broadband reached 79.8 per cent.

The improved connectivity supported business activities such as e-mail communication, internet banking and online information searches.

Meanwhile, businesses expanded their adoption of advanced technologies, including mobile internet and related technologies (74.0 per cent) and cloud computing (60.3 per cent). Internet and 5G technology usage also increased to 33.0 per cent from 30.6 per cent a year earlier, supported by nationwide 4G and 5G coverage.
