Eight nabbed in online gambling bust

KUCHING: Police raided an online gambling call centre in Stutong here under an ‘Op Dadu’ operation and arrested eight foreigners yesterday (July 11).

Kuching district police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said those arrested comprised six men and two women.

“Investigation found that the premises was used as an operation and management centre for online gambling call centre.

“The operators at the online gambling call centre used social media applications such as Whatsapp, Telegram, Wechat and Facebook to promote online gambling,” he said.

Ahsmon added that investigations revealed the call centre has been operating for several months and operates on a 24-hour shift.

“Four individuals will take turns on a 12-hour long shift. Four during the day and four at night,” he said.

Also seized were five computers, five CPUs and five handphones, three modems and other equipment used for the illegal activity.

“Based on the transaction records, since the online gambling call centre began operating, they have been reaping approximately RM450,000,” Ahsmon said.

The case is being investigated under Section 4 (1) (g) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which provides for a fine of up to RM50,000 and a jail term of up to three years.

The suspects will also be investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/63.

The suspects are currently on remand for 14 days from July 13 to July 26.
