MIRI: Police seized 18 motorbikes during a crackdown on illegal street racing and reckless riding over the weekend.

The illegal racers detained together with their vehicles.

The operation, carried out by the Miri District Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division on Sunday evening, involved two senior officers and seven personnel.

They patrolled several hotspots, including Jalan Bandaraya Miri, Jalan Marina, Miri-Bypass, Jalan Tanjung Lobang and Jalan Tudan between 6:00 pm and 9:30 pm.

Miri District Police Chief, ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, said the initiative was aimed at curbing the activities of so-called “road thugs” and ensuring road users comply with traffic laws.

A total of 35 vehicles were inspected, resulting in 18 motorcycles being impounded under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for having been illegally modified.

Officers also issued 101 summonses for a range of traffic offences and questioned 42 individuals.

Farhan urged motorcyclists to ride responsibly, avoid illegal modifications and refrain from congregating by roadsides, which can cause congestion and noise pollution.

He warned that reckless driving endangers not only the riders themselves but also other road users.

He added that similar enforcement operations will continue.

Members of the public with information about illegal racing are encouraged to contact the district police operations room at 085-433400.
