KUCHING: Authorities have uncovered a sophisticated electricity theft operation at a semi-detached house in Stampin here, where illegal cables were concealed underground to bypass the property’s electricity meter.

The discovery was made during a routine inspection by Syarikat SESCO Berhad (SESCO), the operations and utility arm of Sarawak Energy.

Inspection teams found direct tapping cables hidden beneath the ground, connected to the property’s main supply line to allow electricity consumption without proper recording.

To access the concealed cables, the inspection team collaborated with contractors to break through concrete structures before dismantling and seizing the illegal setup as evidence.

SESCO has lodged a police report, and investigations are now underway under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance. Offenders convicted under this section face severe penalties, including fines of up to RM200,000 and imprisonment for up to five years.

The utility company warned the public about the dangers of electricity theft, particularly when non-standard materials and unsafe installation methods are employed.

Such illegal connections significantly increase the risk of electrical fires, damage to appliances, and potential harm to both occupants and neighbouring properties.

Sarawak Energy continues to work closely with relevant authorities to combat electricity theft across the state.

The company’s meter inspection teams receive specialised training to detect emerging theft techniques and are equipped with necessary enforcement tools.

The public have been advised to remain vigilant against individuals offering unauthorised services to reduce electricity bills, as engaging with such services could expose customers to enforcement action.

Accounts displaying suspicious consumption patterns will be monitored and investigated.

Sarawak Energy expressed appreciation for information received from the public regarding electricity theft cases and encouraged continued reporting of such incidents.

Reports can be submitted through the Customer Care Centre at 1300-88-3111 or via email at customercare@sarawakenergy.com. All information is treated with strict confidentiality.
