Elderly injured, family left homeless in fire incidents

MIRI: An elderly man sustained minor injuries after jumping out of a kitchen window to escape a fire that destroyed his home in Lorong Desaras, Jalan Perdana on Wednesday.

The 65-year-old, who lived alone, suffered light injuries to his back during the 10:00 pm incident.

He received preliminary treatment before being taken to the hospital for further care.

According to the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), firefighters from the Lutong and Lopeng stations were dispatched to the scene, about 13 kilometres (km) away, following an emergency call.

Upon arrival, they confirmed that the house and a sedan car parked in front of the house had been completely destroyed by the fire.

Firefighters extinguished the flames using water sourced from a nearby fire hydrant.

Overhaul works followed suit to ensure no potential reignition before the operation ended at 12:10 am.

Meanwhile, in another fire incident at the same area, a family of five – a married couple and their three children – were left with nothing but clothes on their backs when their house at Jalan Tudan Desaras was reduced to ashes earlier today.

No injuries were reported in the 8:04 am incident.

Firefighters from Lutong and Lopeng stations were dispatched to the scene, about 11 km away, following a distress call at 8.04 am.

Upon arrival, they found that the house was beyond saving.

The extinguishing work was carried out using water sourced from a nearby river.

Once the situation was deemed safe, the team concluded the operation at 9:32 am.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred in both incidents are still under investigation.
