Elderly man, grandchild dies in crash while exiting junction

SIBU: An elderly man and his granddaughter were killed in a fatal two-vehicle accident along Jalan Salim yesterday (May 5).

The collision, involving a lorry and a motorcycle, happened at around 11.20 am near the junction to Rumah Birai.

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the victims were on a exiting the junction when they collided with a lorry travelling from Sibu Jaya.

Initial investigations found that the lorry driver was unable to avoid the motorcycle, thus causing the collision.

“The 80-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics due to severe head injuries.

“Meanwhile, his six-year-old granddaughter was rushed to Sibu Hosiptal but succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment at the emergency unit,” he said in a statement.

Their bodies have been sent to the hospital morgue.

Zulkipli said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
