Elderly perishes after blaze engulfs upper floor of home

KUCHING: An elderly man succumbed to his injuries after he was rescued unconscious from a house fire at Lorong Stutong Baru here on Tuesday (Jun 16).

The fire broke out at around 7.05pm, damaging the upper floor of the residence.

Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the 71-year-old was found unconscious inside the master bedroom.

He was rushed to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for treatment but was pronounced dead at 8.30pm on the same day.

“Initial investigations found no elements of foul play in the incident or in the victim’s death.

“The case has been classified as sudden death, while the cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba),” he said.

Those with information related to the incident, is urged to contact Sungai Maong police station chief Insp Awang Ramzi Awang Junaidi at 019-8444123, Sungai Maong police station at 082-420469 or the nearest police station.

Alexson also advised the public against speculating on the incident out of respect for the victim’s family and to avoid interfering with ongoing investigations.
