MIRI: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has proposed the introduction of electric buses in Miri as part of the city’s transition towards a cleaner, low-carbon transport system.
He said the move would complement Sarawak’s broader low-carbon energy agenda while improving both air quality and the urban environment.
“I have suggested to the Mayor and the leadership in Miri that we consider using electric buses. These buses do not emit smoke and operate quietly.
“Miri will not only enjoy cleaner air but also become a quieter city,” he said when officiating the Taste of Borneo Cultural Carnival (TOBC) 4.0 2026 here last night (July 4).
Abang Johari said the proposal is supported by Sarawak’s growing clean energy capacity, with Miri expected to strengthen its power generation capacity through the upcoming combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) project.
“If all goes according to plan, Miri will have an additional 500MW of power by 2029 through the CCGT project,” he said.
He said Sarawak’s low-carbon development strategy has gained international recognition, with the state being acknowledged by the World Economic Forum as a new low-carbon industrial cluster.
“Our state has now been recognised by the World Economic Forum. They acknowledge Sarawak as a new low-carbon industrial cluster.
“The world has recognised us, and I thank the people of Sarawak because we have remained united. That unity has enabled the government to transform our economy to the point that it is now recognised globally,” he said.
He also noted that Sarawak remains committed to pursuing sustainable development founded on mutual trust and confidence while ensuring opportunities are accessible to all.
