DAMASCUS, Syria: A fire broke out on the fifth floor of the University Children’s Hospital here, caused by an electrical short circuit, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported, citing hospital officials.
Firefighters responded promptly and managed to bring the blaze under control.
Hospital Director, Diana al-Asmar, told SANA that the fire started in a storage room containing medical supplies and documents belonging to the nursing staff.
She added that there were no injuries and that the infant incubators were safely evacuated, sustaining no damage.
For his part, Saad al-Fatwa, Director of the Emergency Unit at the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, said that several cases of suffocation occurred due to the inhalation of smoke from the fire.
These cases were treated immediately on site, while some were transferred to Al-Mujtahid and Al-Muwasat hospitals. – BERNAMA-SANA
