MIRI: Police have seized 11 motorcycles and issued more than 50 traffic summonses during an overnight operation targeting illegal street racing.

The operation, which began at 11 pm on Aug 9 and ended at 3bam the following day, was led by the district’s Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division.

Two senior officers and 10 personnel patrolled multiple hotspots, including Jalan Bandaraya Miri, Marina Utama, Jalan Miri-Bypass, Jalan Tanjung Lobang, Jalan Tudan, Jalan Permyjaya and Jalan Canada Hill.

Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said 20 vehicles were inspected during the operation.

Ten motorcycles were detained under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for having been modified from their original structure.

“A 17-year-old local male was also arrested under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous riding. His motorcycle was seized for further investigation,” ACP Mohd Farhan said.

In total, 23 individuals were checked and 55 PDRM summonses were issued for various traffic offences.

Police also detained one man who was behaving suspiciously. Officers found a transparent tube containing a substance believed to be methamphetamine.

The suspect was handed over to the district’s Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division.

ACP Mohd Farhan stressed that such operations will be conducted regularly to deter illegal racing and ensure road safety.

“We advise motorcyclists to ride responsibly, avoid modifying their vehicles, and not to gather on the roadside in ways that cause congestion or disturb public peace,” he said.

Members of the public with information on street racing activities are urged to contact the Miri Police Operations Room at 085-433400.
