KUCHING: The Sarawak government is intensifying efforts to combat vaping among children, teenagers and youths through integrated prevention, advocacy and early intervention instead of immediate prohibition.
The issue dominated discussions during the first Sarawak Social Development Council meeting this year, where agencies reviewed enforcement data, awareness programmes and future strategies addressing vape-related concerns.
“Our priority is prevention through education, advocacy and early intervention while strengthening the role of families and communities in protecting young people,” said Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.
Speaking to reporters during the Sarawak Social Development Council meeting at Wisma Wanita yesterday (July7), Fatimah stressed the state remains open to considering a complete vape ban in future, although any decision requires careful assessment, public preparedness and stronger awareness before implementation.
“Between January and June this year, authorities conducted 135 enforcement operations, including 126 integrated operations and nine special narcotics operations, seizing 7,426.8 millilitres of vape liquid valued at RM1.34 million,” she said.
Fatimah said 1,542 advocacy and awareness programmes were also organised statewide, involving primary schools, secondary schools and district-level One Stop Committees tackling drug and substance abuse.
She said upcoming initiatives include developing child and youth resolutions through the Child Friendly Cities Initiative, university-based prevention programmes and community conventions involving local leaders and educational institutions.
“The resolutions will be submitted to the state One Stop Committee on Drugs and Substance Issues for consideration as future policy recommendations and coordinated intervention measures against vape misuse,” she said.
Fatimah cited the government wants children’s, youths’ and communities’ voices translated into practical policies, creating safer environments and safeguarding future generations from vape-related harm and substance abuse.
