SIMANGGANG: People living along Batang Lupar will be protected from the ferocious tidal bore in the river.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg revealed that to achieve this, the state government had agreed to build embankments along the river.

He explained that the project was aimed at mitigating erosion and protecting riverside villages from big waves.

The details of the project were revealed by the chief minister after he officiated at the Sri Aman Waterfront earth-breaking ceremony at the site of Pesta Benak here, yesterday.

“The estimated cost of the project is RM30 mln which will be included in the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) starting today,” he said.

Also during the visit to Sri Aman, Abang Johari visited the site of the proposed extension of Sri Aman Public Market.

Construction of the two-phase project began in January last year. It is expected to be completed this coming July.
