SIBU: Sarawak’s continued progress depends not only on infrastructure and economic development but also on a united, healthy and socially connected community.

Bawang Assan assemblyman Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh said Sarawak Day serves as a reminder of the state’s unique history, identity and collective journey towards building a peaceful, harmonious and progressive society.

“Today is not merely a celebration of our past, but an opportunity to reaffirm our shared commitment to safeguarding the unity, stability and prosperity that Sarawak has achieved over the years,” he said when officiating at the Sarawak Day Hiking 2026 programme held here on today.

The hiking programme was organised by the Tug of War Club in conjunction with Sarawak Day and attracted participants from various age groups and communities, reflecting growing public interest in healthy lifestyles while fostering greater community interaction.

Wong described the event as more than just a recreational activity, noting that hiking symbolises the values that have shaped Sarawak’s development.

“Every journey requires determination, teamwork and perseverance. These are the same qualities that have enabled Sarawak to move forward and overcome challenges together,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance of preserving Sarawak’s rich natural environment, encouraging participants to appreciate the state’s scenic landscapes while practising responsible outdoor recreation.

Commending the organisers for their initiative, Wong said community-based programmes such as the hike play an important role in strengthening social cohesion by bringing together people from different backgrounds in the spirit of friendship and mutual respect.

He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives that promote public health, youth participation, active lifestyles and stronger community engagement, stressing that sustainable development must be accompanied by strong social bonds.

“A resilient society is built not only through physical development but also through meaningful interactions that cultivate trust, understanding and a sense of belonging among the people,” he added.

Before declaring the event officially open, Wong reminded participants to prioritise safety throughout the hike, care for one another and protect the environment by leaving the trails clean.

He also extended his Sarawak Day greetings to all Sarawakians, expressing hope that the state would continue to enjoy lasting peace, stability, unity and prosperity for generations to come.

The Sarawak Day Hiking 2026 concluded with participants embarking on the commemorative hike, celebrating the occasion through a shared appreciation of nature, health and community spirit.
