MIRI: Sarawak’s Minister of Transport, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, has called on villagers to embrace the spirit of unity and cooperation.

He made the call following a Korban and Aqiqah programme held today at Masjid Darul Iman, Tudan Phase 2A here.

The event, held in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidiladha, saw the ritual sacrifice of three cows, with the meat later distributed to the local Muslim community.

Addressing residents at the event, Lee praised the communal efforts and called for continued cooperation among the village bodies, not only during festive occasions but throughout the year.

“This is a time for sacrifice not just in terms of korban, but also a sacrifice of our time and effort for the greater good,” he said.

“What makes Sarawak special is our unity in diversity. We celebrate Hari Raya, Gawai, Chinese New Year and we greet and support one another regardless of background. That is our Sarawak way of life.”

He proposed that the community channel its collective strength towards organising a large-scale gotong-royong (communal work) to clean up the village.

“I suggest the village committees join forces and work with the local city council to organise a clean-up campaign,” Lee said.

“If there are bulky items to dispose of, or blocked drains to be cleared, let’s do it together. We can request the city council to provide trucks and machinery for support.”

He emphasised that such efforts would not only improve cleanliness but also enhance living conditions and potentially reduce the presence of stagnant water, which can lead to mosquito-borne illnesses.

“It’s about making our kampung more liveable and ensuring a healthier environment for all,” he added.

“Let’s make this a joint effort, mosque committees, village heads, and all local bodies, working hand in hand.”

Lee also expressed gratitude to the volunteers and donors who made the event possible, highlighting their dedication and community spirit.

“Thank you to everyone who helped prepare the meat and to those who donated the cows for today’s korban,” he said.

“It’s through such acts of kindness and cooperation that we strengthen the bonds within our community.”
