SRI AMAN: Sarawak’s vibrant cultural heritage was on full display at the Sri Aman Craft Carnival here last month.

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Snowdan Lawan, who officiated at its opening stressed on cultural pride and its importance.

“Our cultures, colours, food, festivities, traditional costumes, and crafts say it all. They reflect our identity,” he said at the event held at the Sri Aman Waterfront on Feb 26.

He encouraged Sarawakians to embrace their heritage and promote it globally.

“If we have children studying or working overseas, do ask them to bring their traditional costume such as Baju Burung or Selampai for them to wear during their gatherings at universities or workplaces. This way, we make our state known to the world,” he added.

The Sri Aman Craft Carnival, jointly organised by the Sarawak Craft Council (SCC) and Majlis Daerah Sri Aman, attracted participants from the Sri Aman, Betong, Lubok Antu, and Saratok districts.

A total of 32 display booths were set up, showcasing an array of handmade crafts, including woven textiles, mats, baskets, ceramics, buri products, accessories, traditional beads, wooden carvings, and apparel.

Snowdan also highlighted two funding opportunities — the Facilitation Fund and Event Fund — which can be applied for through the ministry’s website.

“These funds aim to support local craft entrepreneurs in upgrading their skills and organising workshops,”he said.

He urged artisans and associations to collaborate with government agencies such as Kraftangan Malaysia,
Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak (MTCP), Sarawak Craft Council, Sarawak Tourism Board, and Majlis Daerah Sri Aman.

These agencies provide platforms for participation in major cultural events like Pesta Benak, the Sri Aman Craft Carnival, and the Borneo Craft Carnival.

Encouraging local entrepreneurs to embrace digitalisation, Snowdan stressed the importance of e-commerce in the craft industry.

“Utilising new technology helps in marketing, packaging, and distribution, ensuring faster delivery, simplified trade transactions, and cost savings,” he said.

Also present at the event was the Chief Executive Officer of the Sarawak Craft Council, Suriya Charles.
