BINTULU: Individuals of all ages need to maintain a positive and happy state of mind to remain physically healthy.

Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang Leong Ming said being in a happy state of mind increases serotonin, dopamine, endorphins, and oxytocin in the body to promote happiness and pleasure, while reducing depression and anxiety.

“I always believe that prevention is better than cure, and besides increasing our health awareness, engaging in sports and regular exercise can also strengthen our immune system.”

Pang said this when speaking at the ’90 minutes Zumba Bersama Jammer Izzy Cervantes’ programme organised by the Youth Section of the Bintulu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Studio 29 recently.

Citing a Ministry of Health report, he said non-communicable diseases such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and anxiety disorders are becoming more prevalent among the young generation in this country.

He said the age of patients suffering from the disease was reported as early as 30 years old with the number of patients increasing year by year.

Speaking about the programme, Pang welcomed Zumba instructor Cervantes, who is from the United States.

“I hope you can bring us a unique Zumba experience and take the opportunity to explore the beauty of Sarawak and Bintulu during your stay here,” he said.
