KUCHING: Women must rise as agents of change by spreading knowledge and inspiring their communities, ultimately contributing to national development, said Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Mustapha Sakmud.

Mustapha emphasised that women today are no longer confined to traditional roles but are key drivers in shaping families, communities, and the nation at the ‘Women’s Seminar: Graceful Charisma, Serene Soul’ event held at Politeknik Kuching Sarawak today.

“The theme of this seminar reflects the strength and resilience of women; graceful on the outside, yet inwardly calm, emotionally mature, and capable leaders,” he said.

The seminar featured panel discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions on holistic wellbeing, encompassing physical, mental, and social aspects, targeted at empowering both women and senior citizens.

Pertubuhan SALWA Malaysia (a women-led organisation dedicated to empowering women and families through intellectual and spiritual development) organised the seminar in collaboration with the Association of Wives and Women Members of the Civil Service (PUSPANITA) under the Ministry of Higher Education, demonstrating a collective effort to respond to women’s evolving needs, particularly in tackling family and societal issues across different levels.

The participants included academicians, civil servants, students, community activists, and women leaders.

“This gathering brings together diverse voices to exchange experiences and ideas, strengthening the capacity of women to face modern challenges,” said Mustapha.

He also stressed the importance of addressing elderly neglect with more empathetic and innovative strategies.

“I believe today’s discussions will spark critical thinking and action on the ground,” he added.

Mustapha also highlighted the government’s continuous efforts under the MADANI administration, particularly through the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM), in empowering women through entrepreneurship programmes, skills training, mental health initiatives, safety awareness, and protection from domestic violence.

“These efforts ensure that women remain competitive, informed, and relevant contributors to the nation’s progress,” he concluded.
