SERIAN: The Yellow Ribbon Project has been described as a powerful symbol of second chances, representing hope, trust, and society’s belief that every individual deserves the opportunity to rebuild their life and reintegrate into the community.

The initiative, which focuses on providing second chances to ex-offenders — referred to as “prospects” — to rebuild their lives after incarceration, is driven by the Sarawak Youth and Sports Department in collaboration with the Sarawak Prisons Department and SOCSO Sarawak.

“The Yellow Ribbon is not just a symbol; it embodies the promise that with the right support, individuals who have served their sentences can return as productive members of society.

“We believe that punishment should not be the end of a person’s journey. Rather, it can be the beginning of a better life. Our responsibility is not merely to penalise but to guide, educate, and empower change,” said Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, when officiating at the Sarawak-level Yellow Ribbon Project 2025 at Borneo Empurau Farm & Resort yesterday (July 28).

The Tarat assemblyman emphasised the importance of rehabilitation through skills training, personal development, employment opportunities, spiritual guidance, and psychosocial support — providing prospects with a structured path toward meaningful reintegration.

Meanwhile, Abdul Zamrie Randim, Head of Youth Development at the Sarawak Youth and Sports Department, said the Yellow Ribbon Project has played a transformative role since its introduction.

“Between 2019 and 2024, the programme benefitted 1,356 youth prospects and Henry Gurney School residents, with over 51,000 youth reached through awareness campaigns,” he said.

The 2025 edition introduces a structured “Place and Train” approach, where selected participants will undergo a six-month placement within partner companies or industries.

The programme is designed to equip participants with vocational skills, economic development training, and personal growth support, enabling them to reintegrate with dignity and purpose.

Beyond employment, the initiative also aims to help prospects restore self-worth, combat societal stigma, and contribute positively to national development.
